RYOBI battery-powered Nailer or Stapler doesn’t fire deep enough

10/06/2026, 20:27

If your nails aren’t firing deep enough or your brads aren’t sitting flush, try the following troubleshooting steps:

Safety First

  • Remove the battery from the tool before doing any adjustments to the tool

  1. Battery Capacity
  • Ensure you're using a battery with sufficient amperage — ideally 4Ah or higher.

  1. Battery Charge
  • Check that the battery has at least 2 bars on the fuel gauge to provide adequate power.

  1. Power Adjustment
  • Locate the power adjustment dial or switch on the back of the tool and set it appropriately for your application.
  • For hardwood, full power is typically required.
  • Note: If you're using the RFN1830X Framing Nailer, this model does not have a power adjustment feature — instead, check the depth adjustment.

  1. Depth Adjustment
  • Use the depth adjustment dial near the nose of the nailer to set the correct depth for your material.
  • Note: This feature is not applicable to the 18V ONE+ Stapler – Tool Only (R18ST50-0).

  1. Combination Settings
  •  Achieving the desired result may require a combination of power and depth adjustments, and some trial and error.

  1. Technique Matters
  • Improper technique — such as bouncing the tool off the workpiece or failing to grip it firmly — can cause nails to misfire or sit proud.

Correct Usage Tip:
Hold the nailer vertically against the workpiece and apply firm downward pressure before pulling the trigger.
