How to Lock and Secure Drill Bits on a Ryobi Impact Driver?

25/02/2026, 17:28

1. Ensure safety first

  • Disconnect the battery pack before inserting or removing any drill or driver bit.

2. Locate the chuck

  • An impact driver uses a ¼" (6.35 mm) quick-release hex chuck.
  • This chuck is designed for hex-shank bits only.
  • Ensure the drill bit has a ¼" (6.35 mm) hex shank.

3. Insert the new drill bit

  • Pull the chuck collar forward (away from the tool).
  • Insert the new hex-shank bit into the chuck.
  • Release the collar to lock the bit in place.

4. Confirm the bit is secure

  • Gently tug on the bit to ensure it’s locked in and won’t fall out.
  • If it pulls free, repeat the insertion process.

5. Reconnect the battery

  • Reconnect the battery pack.
  • Grip the drill by the handle, ensuring your other hand is clear of the drill bit.
  • Gently squeeze the trigger to ensure the bit spins correctly.
