Why is my RYOBI Drill Driver slow to drill into brick?

26/02/2026, 15:37

Drill drivers are not designed for drilling into brick or masonry.

Drill drivers aren’t suitable for brick or masonry because they only rotate the bit. Hard materials need more than rotation, so progress is slow, heat builds up, and bits wear out quickly.

Hammer drills (with a masonry bit) are designed for masonry. Their hammering action chips the material as the bit turns, making drilling faster, easier, and far more effective.

In short:

  • Drill driver: timber, metal, plastics
  • Hammer drill: brick, concrete, masonry
