What is the ring around the anvil for?

The ring on the end of the square anvil is called a friction ring & it is designed to prevent the socket from falling off.

It is a design requirement of the anvil, but it may make socket changes harder to align initially so we encourage practice to familiarise yourself with interchanging sockets.
