Types of sanders
Random orbit sander
The most common type of orbital sander.
- Spins the sanding disc while moving it in small ellipses or “orbits”.
This dual action creates a random sanding pattern, reducing swirl marks often left by standard orbital sanders.
- Suitable for both rough sanding and fine finishing on most surface areas.
- Ideal for flat surfaces, that require a neat finish.
Detail sander
Also known as palm sanders or finish sanders.
- Compact design, finishing with a point on the pad.
- Sandpaper is usually attached using a hook-and-loop system.
- Suitable for fine finishing and smaller surface areas.
- Ideal for getting into corners and along edges.
Belt sander
Designed for heavy-duty material removal and smoothing large surfaces.
- Uses a continuous loop of sandpaper mounted on two drums.
- Provides fast material removal but requires careful handling to avoid gouging.
- Best suited for initial sanding or levelling before moving to finer finishing tools.
- Ideal for sanding large, flat areas such as floors, doors, and worktops.
