Troubleshooting: Saw Cutting Out

Safety First: Remove the battery or unplug the tool before changing the blade

Important: Always wear protective gloves before any maintenance.

Cutting out can occur for various reasons, including blade condition, tool usage, power supply, or the application itself.

Inspect the Blade

  • A worn, blunt, or incorrect blade type can cause the saw to stop prematurely.
  • Regularly check for damage such as broken teeth, bending, or excessive wear.
  • Replace any damaged or unsuitable blade and ensure the replacement is appropriate for your project.

Inspect the Application

  • Confirm the material being cut is properly secured. Excessive movement can interfere with cutting, cause binding or pinching, and lead to the saw stopping or kicking back.
  • Check the blade’s cutting capacity and material compatibility. This information is usually printed on the blade or its packaging.

Inspect the Battery

  • Verify the battery charge level. It is normal for power output to drop as the charge decreases. If the battery is too low, the tool may stop under load. Recharge or replace the battery as needed.
  • Reciprocating saws draw more power than many other tools. For best performance, consider using a higher-capacity battery.

Inspect the Power Cord (Corded Models)

  • Unplug the saw before checking the cord for damage or fraying.
  • Reconnect to a working mains outlet after inspection.
  • If using an extension lead, do not exceed 25 metres, as this can cause voltage drop and reduced performance.

Inspect the Saw

  • Overheating can cause the saw to cut out or lose power. This may result from excessive load, force, or prolonged heavy use. Refer to the product manual or Ryobi website for specific capacity ratings.
  • If the saw cuts out, remove it from the workpiece, check the battery level, and test the saw under no load.
    - If it runs, resume cutting at a slower speed or with less force, ensuring you remain within the tool’s capacity.
    - If it does not run, remove the battery and allow the saw and/or battery to cool for at least 30 minutes before retrying.

If the Issue Persists

If the problem remains unresolved and the saw is still under warranty, return it to Bunnings with your receipt or proof of purchase for a warranty assessment.
