How to Use a Reciprocating Saw

Safety First

  1. Read the user manual before operating the tool.
  2. Wear appropriate PPE: safety glasses, gloves, and hearing protection.
  3. Ensure the tool is switched off and the battery removed (or unplugged for corded models) before adjusting or changing blades.
  4. Warning: Always check what is behind the material you are cutting. Be cautious of hidden electrical wiring, plumbing, or other hazards that could cause injury or damage.

Choose the Right Blade

1. Reciprocating saws can cut wood, metal, plastic, and plasterboard, but you must use the correct blade for the material:

  • Wood blades: Coarse teeth for fast cuts.
  • Metal blades: Fine teeth for cutting pipes or sheet metal.

2. Check the blade packaging for material compatibility and maximum cutting capacity.

Fitting the Blade

1. Use the tool-less blade change system:

  • Rotate the blade clamp to unlock.
  • Insert the blade shank fully into the clamp.
  • Release the clamp to lock the blade securely.

2. Ensure the blade is firmly seated before use.

Prepare the Workpiece

1. Secure the material using clamps or a stable surface.

2. Avoid holding the workpiece by hand, as this can cause instability and kickback.

Power Up

1. Insert the battery or plug into a mains outlet.

2. Check that the lock-off button is disengaged before pressing the trigger.

Position the Saw Shoe

1. Before starting the cut, ensure the saw shoe is in firm contact with the material or as close as possible.

2. This provides stability, reduces vibration, and improves cutting accuracy.

  • 4. For plunge cuts, tilt the saw and ease the blade into the material slowly.

  • After Use

  • 1. Switch the lock off switch to engaged
    2. Remove the battery or unplug.
