How to Use the Drywall Cutter Tool

1. Before You Start

Read & Prepare
  • Read and understand all safety instructions before operating the tool.
  • Always wear eye protection, a dust mask, and ear protection.
  • Keep your workspace clean, well lit.

2. Set Up the Tool

1) Ensure the Battery is Removed
  • Remove the battery before making any adjustments or installing accessories to prevent accidental start-up.
2) Install the Collet and Bit

The tool supports two collet sizes:

  • 3.2 mm (1/8") (this is installed in the tool by default)
  • 6.35 mm (1/4")

  1. Locate the Collet Wrench
The wrench is located on the back of the depth guide.
    • Lift the tool‑free depth adjustment lever, slide the depth guide out, and remove the wrench from the back of the guide.
  2. Open the Spindle Lock
    • Press the spindle lock (the light grey button on the side of the tool) and use the wrench to loosen the collet nut by turning it anti-clockwise.
    • Once the collet nut is loosened (full removal is not required), insert the appropriate rotary cutting bit.
    • Tighten the collet nut securely by turning it clockwise with the wrench while holding the spindle lock.
  3. Reinstall the Depth Guide & Set the Cutting Depth
    • Open the tool‑free depth adjustment lever and reinstall the depth guide.
    • Adjust the guide so the tip of the cutting bit protrudes slightly beyond the thickness of the plasterboard (or plywood).
    • Lock the tool‑free depth lever firmly.

3. Operating the Tool

Starting the Tool
  • Ensure the switch is set to OFF.
  • Insert your Ryobi battery.
  • Hold the tool firmly and close to the surface to be cut, then switch it ON when ready.

Cutting Technique

Using a Bit without a Knife‑Edge Tip (eg. Guide‑Point Tip)
  • Begin your cut at a 45° angle for a smoother entry.
  • Then rotate the tool to 90° before cutting.
Using a Bit with a Knife-Edge or Standard Tip
  • You may plunge directly into the surface at 90°.

During the Cut

  • Maintain a steady grip and apply moderate pressure.
  • Ensure the guide is against the surface at all times.
  • Do not force the tool — allow the bit’s speed to do the work.

General Cutting Tips (Guide‑Point Bit)

For interior shapes (e.g., a door or window opening):

  • Cut clockwise:
    • Up the left‑hand side
    • Across from left to right
    • Down the right‑hand side
    • Back from right to left

For cutting around the outside of a shape:

  • Cut counter-clockwise.

4. Storage

Power Down Safely
  • Switch OFF and remove the battery before cleaning, changing bits, or storing the tool.
  • Clean the tool using a dry cloth.
  • Clear out dust from vents and collet.
  • Store in a cool dry location.

5. Tips for Best Results

  • Use sharp, clean, high‑speed rotary bits.
  • Allow the tool to cut at its own pace.
  • Take regular breaks during prolonged use.
  • Use dust extraction where practical to reduce airborne dust.
  • Observe the correct direction of cut, when using guide point bits.
