26/02/2026, 18:51
How to remove the chuck from a Ryobi drill

Safety first

1. Always disconnect the tool from power (unplug or remove the battery) before starting any maintenance.

Tools required

  • PH3 screwdriver or Torx screwdriver (depending on drill model)
  • 10–13 mm allen key
  • Rubber mallet (optional, for added leverage)

Step-by-step instructions

1. Locate the internal chuck screw

  • Open the chuck fully to reveal the screw in the centre.

2. Remove the internal screw

  • Insert the PH3 screwdriver into the chuck.
  • Turn clockwise to loosen (note: this is a reverse-threaded screw).
  • Remove the screw and set it aside safely—do not discard.

3. Loosen the chuck

  • Insert the allen key into the chuck and tighten it in the chuck jaws securely.
  • Apply strong force anti-clockwise to break the chuck free.
  • You may use a rubber mallet to strike the allen key for extra leverage—secure the drill before doing so.

4. Remove the chuck

  • Once loosened, unscrew the chuck by hand (anti-clockwise) and remove it from the spindle.
